Running or jogging is suitable for everyone, as it offers benefits regardless of age or fitness level.. Even better, it becomes more enjoyable when shared with friends. This page, therefore, offers something for everyone who wants to run in Solihull and get active in their own way.

Running has a range of physical, mental, and social benefits which include:

  • Helps maintain a healthy weight
  • Promotes strong bones and strengthens muscles
  • It helps you to feel energised and improves mood
  • Improves Cardiovascular fitness
  • Its FREE!

Most new runners start out using a run/jog/walk technique. At first, there’s no need to worry about what level you are at. Instead, you can work at your own intensity, and as a result, gradually build up your stamina. Moreover, this approach allows you to progress at a pace that suits you best.

Running and Jogging for Beginners

General tips for beginners:

  • If you are over 40, overweight and/or have any chronic illnesses, it is best to see your doctor before you start a running program.
  • To begin with, start with a brisk walk and aim for at least 30 minutes per session to gradually build your fitness.
  • Before you head out, make sure to warm up and stretch thoroughly. Then, cool down with light stretches once you return to help your body recover.
  • Make sure you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids and taking a water bottle with you on your run.
  • In addition, allow at least two full rest days each week to help prevent overtraining and support recovery.
  • For variety and balance, try incorporating a low-impact activity once a week—it’s excellent for your joints, muscles, and bones.
  • When planning your route, consider using GB Mapometer, a great free tool that makes it easy to map out your runs.
  • Finally, invest in a proper pair of running trainers and dress appropriately for the weather and terrain to stay comfortable and safe.
  • Also, be sure to dress appropriately for the weather, and wear reflective clothing if you’re heading out in the dark.
